 SYSTEM DESIGN PROCESS
The first phase of converting a product concept into a product is System Design. The System may involve both Hardware as well as Software; in that case we need to demarcate the functionalities of both the Hardware and the Software.
Hardware Design is the process of achieving the desired Hardware functionality by a suitably designed hardware product that can be assembled and produced and tested for the requisite functionality. This process can be broken into several steps: Conversion of Hardware functional concepts into Specifications/ Requirements; Conversion of Specs/ Requirements into Circuit Schematics, & Conversion of Circuit Schematic into PCB Layout Designs. The other elements in design are wire harnesses & cables, and mechanical boxes / chassis. All this design activity makes it possible to fabricate the required PCBs and assemble them ( i.e. populate them with the required electronic, electrical and mechanical components).
If the system design involved both Hardware and Software, then Hardware cannot function properly without the required software. Software Design would generally involve Firmware design, System Software and/or application software development.
